What you (don’t) owe your parents
An offer of relief
Everything your parents did, they did for you.
But not the real you; the version of you they imagined. This mythical version was the happiest, freest, healthiest, most successful version of you your parents could imagine. But you are capable of being freer, happier, and more successful than they could ever dream.
What you owe your parents is to live your life exactly the way that Life tells you to live it.
Exactly the way your impulses, gut feelings, needs, and desires tell you to. If your parents are colonized people, which most of ours are, they won’t know this. They’ll think that the contract was for you to do what they tell you to do. But the advice your parents have for you is entirely out of date.
Your parents were born into a world that no longer exists.
Their world evolved into the world you were born into. Their ideas, strategies, and plans for how you should navigate Life’s challenges are - at least - one generation out of date.
Worse, systemic oppression creates persistent stagnation which ensures that parental ideas, strategies, and plans are now many generations out of date. For many generations, Children have been listening to Parents instead of Life.
Because of this, humanity’s evolution stalled long ago.
All the children that were supposed to follow Life‘s guidance out of oppression, followed their parent’s advice and supported the systems that imprisoned them. Sadly, they did it for bribes that were not worth it in the end.
But that’s okay.
The past has passed and today is a new day. It is never too late to be free.
Whatever age you are, today is the day to follow your aliveness. Move how you want to move. Do what you want to do. Be who you want to be.
The advice of the past is stale and rotting. Leave it behind. The garden of life awaits your input on how to grow the world of tomorrow.
Plant the seeds your aliveness wants to plant. Your parents had their turn to impact the garden of life.
Now it’s yours.
But it won’t be forever…
